German at the intermediate level.
B1 is the threshold. CEFR calls it the "independent user" level, and at Schiller we call it the door-opening level. This is the level that matters: the minimum requirement for German student-visa applications, German university preparatory courses, most German MNC roles, and the family-reunion visa.
Over 90 sessions, you will move from communicating in everyday situations (A2) to discussing your opinions, experiences, dreams, and arguments in German. You will read newspapers, watch German shows, and hold complex conversations with confidence. The B1 certification is internationally recognised — and at Schiller, we prepare you for it like our reputation depends on it. Because it does.

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 (and equally TELC B1) is the most widely recognised intermediate certification of German competence. It is the minimum requirement for German student-visa applications, German university Studienkolleg admission, family-reunion visas, and most entry-level German MNC roles.

Why is B1 so important?+
B1 is the first internationally recognised "independent user" level. German visas, university applications, and most professional roles use B1 as their minimum cutoff. It is the difference between "I know some German" and "I can function in German."
What is the difference between Goethe B1 and TELC B1?+
Both are CEFR-aligned and equally recognised. Goethe is run by the Goethe-Institut; TELC is independent. Most German universities and visa authorities accept both. We prepare you for either at no extra cost.
Can I get a German student visa with just B1?+
B1 alone qualifies you for visa application processing in many cases, but for actual admission to a German Bachelor's programme, B2 is typically required. For Master's in English-taught programmes, B1 often suffices.
How long does B1 take with Fast Track?+
Fast Track B1: 10 weeks at ~8 – 9 sessions per week. It is intensive but feasible. Many of our visa-deadline scholars choose this route over the 20-week Regular pace.
Can I retake B1 if I do not pass?+
Yes — and we provide free re-preparation sessions in such cases. The Goethe-Institut allows unlimited re-attempts with a 4-week gap. Our 96% first-attempt rate makes this rare.
Is the Schreiben (writing) section really the hardest?+
For most Indian scholars, yes. Three writing tasks in 60 minutes, with strict formatting and grammar requirements. Our preparation includes faculty-graded mocks specifically for this section.
What vocabulary size is expected at B1?+
Approximately 2,400 active words. By the end of our B1 course, you will know around 2,500 – 2,800 — enough to read most authentic German texts with occasional dictionary support.
Are there age limits for the Goethe B1 exam?+
None for adults. The Goethe-Institut also offers a junior version (Fit in Deutsch) for younger scholars. Our B1 course is calibrated for adult learners aged 16+.
Can I work in Germany with B1?+
For most professional roles, no — B2 is the standard requirement. For hospitality, service, or some IT roles, B1 may suffice. The truth: aim for B2 if your goal is the German job market.
Is B1 sufficient for IELTS-equivalent recognition?+
German B1 is roughly equivalent to IELTS 5.5 – 6.0 for general communication purposes. The two systems test different languages, so direct conversion is approximate.
How long after A2 should I start B1?+
Ideally within 2 – 4 weeks of completing A2. The longer the gap, the more A2 review you will need before B1 effective progress. Some scholars enrol in A2 + B1 back-to-back for continuity.
